Ecco the Dolphin Reboot, New Game Planned

By ScarlettDec 16,2025

The visionary behind Ecco the Dolphin has confirmed that remakes of the classic titles are in progress, along with an entirely new third installment currently in development.

In an exclusive interview featured on Xbox Wire, Ed Annunziata — creator of the notoriously challenging action-adventure series — discussed marine conservation efforts before dropping exciting news:

"Our original development team will completely remaster both Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco: The Tides of Time. Following this, we'll create a brand-new third game featuring modern gameplay and visual standards. More details coming soon."

While 2000's Dreamcast release Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future technically served as the third main series entry, Annunziata wasn't involved in its development. A planned sequel titled Ecco 2: Sentinels of the Universe was ultimately cancelled.

"I'm finally ready to enter that secret password from Tides of Time's finale — still saved in my original game manual," shared one nostalgic fan. Another commented: "Few realize how utterly surreal these games' narratives actually were."

Though Annunziata hasn't specified release dates, an official countdown on the Ecco the Dolphin website currently shows approximately one year remaining (8,508 hours) until completion.

The original 1992 Sega Genesis title introduced players to Ecco's underwater world devastated by catastrophic storms. Its 1994 sequel expanded the aquatic adventure across time and space. The 1995 educational spinoffs Ecco Jr. focused on younger audiences.

Our 2007 review noted: "IGN's Ecco the Dolphin review concluded this cult classic hasn't aged gracefully. While innovative for its era, the gameplay mechanics feel outdated compared to enduring franchises like Sonic."

The Dreamcast installment fared better critically, earning a 7.6 rating in IGN's Defender of the Future review: "Prepare to be dazzled by Ecco's vivid personality and stunning visuals as you protect your oceanic homeland in this immersive adventure."
