Gamers Express Discontent Over Donkey Kong Country Returns HD Price Tag
The upcoming remake of Retro Studios' 2010 Wii platformer, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, is facing backlash from fans due to its price. This latest port to the Nintendo Switch has sparked considerable debate online.
Nintendo's recent Direct revealed Forever Entertainment S.A.'s enhanced version, launching January 16, 2025. Pre-orders are open on the Nintendo eShop, but the $60 price point has ignited a firestorm of criticism.
Reddit discussions highlight the perceived high cost. Many users deem the $60 price tag excessive for a remake, particularly when compared to other Nintendo remasters. The 2023 Metroid Prime remaster, for example, was priced at $40.
However, counterarguments cite the Donkey Kong franchise's historically superior sales figures compared to Metroid. Its strong brand recognition, boosted by appearances in the successful Super Mario Bros. Movie and the upcoming Super Nintendo World expansion at Universal Studios Japan (delayed from Spring 2024 to the latter half of the year), is presented as justification.
Donkey Kong, a Nintendo mainstay for 43 years, boasts a legacy of top-selling titles across various consoles, including the SNES and N64. Previous Switch remakes of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and Mario vs. Donkey Kong also achieved significant commercial success.
Despite the negative feedback regarding its price, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is anticipated to perform well. The eShop listing indicates a 9 GB file size, noticeably larger than the 2018 Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Switch remake (approximately 6.6 GB).
