Disney's Snow White Remake Struggles to Break Even Post Lackluster Box Office Debut

By EricMay 28,2025

Snow White, directed by Marc Webb of The Amazing Spider-Man fame, faced a challenging start at the box office, securing one of the lowest domestic totals for Disney's remakes to date. According to Comscore, the film opened with a domestic box office of $43 million, marking it as the second highest opener of 2025, only surpassed by the MCU's Captain America: Brave New World. Despite topping the charts for the week, this figure fell short of the $45 million opening of the live-action Dumbo in 2019 and missed the mark on pre-release estimates.

For perspective, other Disney remakes such as 2019's The Lion King, 2017's Beauty and the Beast, 2016's The Jungle Book, and 2023's The Little Mermaid all boasted opening weekend domestic earnings exceeding $100 million.

Internationally, Snow White's performance was similarly subdued, pulling in $44.3 million over its opening weekend. This brings the film's global box office total to $87.3 million, as reported by Comscore.

PlaySnow White, a live-action adaptation of Disney’s beloved 1937 animated classic, features Rachel Zegler as the titular character and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. With a reported production budget exceeding $250 million, the film now confronts a steep challenge to break even, especially when factoring in marketing expenses.

However, there is hope for Snow White. Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel to the 2019 Lion King remake, started with a modest $35.4 million domestic opening but ultimately grossed over $717 million worldwide. Disney is likely banking on a similar turnaround for Snow White, even as questions continue to swirl around the performance of Captain America: Brave New World, which has accumulated $400.8 million globally after six weekends, with $192.1 million from the domestic market and $208.7 million internationally.

IGN's review of Snow White awarded it a score of 7/10, stating, "Snow White is a live-action Disney remake that meaningfully adapts its original, rather than creating a lesser mimicry."
