Conquering Zhang Jiao in Dynasty Warriors: Origins: A Comprehensive Guide
One of the initial hurdles in Dynasty Warriors: Origins is the formidable Zhang Jiao, leader of the Yellow Turbans. This guide provides a strategic approach to defeating him.
Phase 1: A Solo Showdown
This initial phase is a one-on-one duel in a spacious wasteland. Zhang Jiao employs sorcery, hurling stones across the arena. His attacks vary depending on your distance:
- Close Range: Four stones are summoned, demanding swift evasion.
- Long Range: Eight stones are launched in pairs, easily dodged by circling him.
Maintain a safe distance when he summons a large volley of stones to avoid significant damage. While primarily a ranged fighter, Zhang Jiao possesses close-combat combos (parryable) and an area-of-effect (AOE) attack that repels you. A glowing white aura signals his impending AOE; retreat to avoid damage.
Later in this phase, he unleashes red-aura attacks (uncancelable): a massive rockfall and clone summoning. The best strategy is to maintain distance and wait for the attacks to conclude before resuming your assault. Equip a sword for optimal damage output compared to spears or gauntlets.
Resource Management is Crucial: You likely have limited healing opportunities (around four uses depending on skill upgrades). Utilize the meat buns located near the arena entrance to replenish your health during strategic retreats.
Phase 2: Aided Assault
Activating Musou Rage initiates Phase 2, where the Yellow Turbans join Zhang Jiao. Fortunately, your own army arrives as reinforcement, providing respite. Use this opportunity to heal using the meat buns. Zhang Jiao introduces tornadoes to disrupt your attacks; be mindful of the wind to avoid being thrown off balance.
Zhang Jiao will attempt a Grand Tactic, requiring you to eliminate 300 soldiers within a short timeframe. Failure results in a devastating attack. Simultaneously, he summons lightning strikes. Observe the ground for a closing ring; evade when it flashes. Musou Mode, especially basic Musou mode given the time constraint, is highly effective for clearing out large groups of soldiers.
Successfully countering Zhang Jiao's Grand Tactic twice brings him back to the battlefield with Phase 1 tactics. With your army's support, this final phase should be relatively straightforward, concluding Chapter 1.
Victory is Yours!
Master these strategies and you will conquer Zhang Jiao in Dynasty Warriors: Origins, available now on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
