DCU Film The Authority 'On the Back Burner,' as James Gunn Points to Difficulty 'Getting It Right in a World With The Boys'

DC's upcoming film adaptation of The Authority faces setbacks, according to DC Studios co-chief James Gunn. Initially announced as a major project within Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, the film has been moved to the "back burner."

Gunn cited the project's complexity and the existing landscape of similar superhero properties, particularly Amazon's The Boys, as contributing factors to the delays. He acknowledged the challenges in developing a story that both stays true to the source material's brutal nature and fits within the broader DC Universe, especially considering ongoing projects and established characters. The need to integrate The Authority with existing DCU narratives and characters already in production further complicates the process.

While The Authority is temporarily sidelined, one member, The Engineer/Angela Spica, is slated to appear in the upcoming Superman: Legacy. For more on The Authority characters, see IGN's article, "Who Are the Authority: The WildStorm DCU Characters Explained."

Other Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters projects have also experienced delays. Waller, a spin-off of Peacemaker, has encountered setbacks, while Booster Gold is progressing smoothly. Paradise Lost remains a priority and is actively in development, with the pilot script currently being written. Swamp Thing, directed by James Mangold, is on hold pending Mangold's availability, but its delay is not considered critical to the overall DCU storyline.
