Dynasty Warriors: Origins Battle of Hulao Gate Guide
The Battle of Hulao Gate marks the final stage of Chapter 2 in Dynasty Warriors: Origins, where your mission is to defeat Dong Zhuo. This battle is notably more challenging and time-consuming than previous missions.
At the outset, navigate to the four enemy bases located in the bottom right corner of the map. After capturing two of these bases, a cutscene will trigger, showing a cavalry unit, led by Zhang Liao, descending from a hill towards your position. Continue your strategy without distraction; you'll encounter and defeat this cavalry naturally as you progress through the bases. Defeating Zhang Liao will reward you with the twin pike weapon, enhancing your arsenal.
Once all bases are under your control, you can initiate an assault on the gate, leading to your first major clash with Dong Zhuo's forces. The battle is intense, but your primary focus should be on protecting Cao Cao until he executes his Grand Tactic. This action will weaken the enemy's defenses, allowing you to advance towards Hulao Gate.
Lu Bu Appears
As the battle progresses, Dong Zhuo will deploy Lu Bu to the frontlines. It's crucial not to engage Lu Bu directly; a one-on-one confrontation with him is almost certain death. Instead, focus on eliminating weaker enemy officers around the edges to maintain your morale, which Lu Bu's presence significantly diminishes.
Lu Bu will eventually move to attack your main base, targeting Yuan Shao. Resist the urge to chase him; a fundamental rule in Dynasty Warriors is to never pursue Lu Bu. Liu Bei and his forces will attempt to delay Lu Bu, giving you a window to focus on defeating Dong Zhuo. This creates a time-sensitive scenario; you must defeat Dong Zhuo before Liu Bei's forces are overwhelmed and retreat, or Lu Bu will destroy Yuan Shao, ending the mission.
Go After Dong Zhuo
Once Lu Bu departs, quickly replenish your supplies, such as meat buns, at any of your captured bases. As Cao Cao prepares for a charge, redirect your efforts to capturing the northern and western bases. With all three squads ready and your health restored, enter the closest commander's circle and launch your attack on Dong Zhuo.
You'll face a massive army, and Dong Zhuo will initiate his Grand Tactic, launching fireballs at you. Your immediate goal is to destroy the two front catapults. If available, use Musou Rage to break through the wall of soldiers guarding the catapults. Clear the surrounding soldiers and officers to allow your troops to demolish the catapults, ending Dong Zhuo's first Grand Tactic.
As you advance, Dong Zhuo will deploy another Grand Tactic. This time, you must defeat one of his officers to stop it. Ascend the right stairs to confront the officer, but be prepared for an ambush by Diaochan, who has sided with Dong Zhuo. If possible, duel Diaochan to avoid being overwhelmed by both her and the officer simultaneously.
After neutralizing the second Grand Tactic, the path to Dong Zhuo should be clear. With your forces' high morale and potential support from Dian Wei's Grand Tactic, you can easily overpower Dong Zhuo's remaining troops. Opt for a straightforward attack rather than a duel, as Dong Zhuo and his forces will be significantly weakened by this point.
And that's how you successfully complete the Battle of Hulao Gate in Dynasty Warriors: Origins! The game is available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
