Sid Meier's Civilization VII: A VR Revolution on Meta Quest 3

Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making a splash in the virtual reality (VR) world with its upcoming release on Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets this Spring 2025. This marks the franchise's first foray into VR and mixed reality (MR) gaming.

Meta Quest 3 Exclusivity

Announced at the Civ World Summit on February 8th, 2025, 2K Games and Firaxis Games confirmed Civ VII VR's exclusive launch on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S platforms. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed excitement for this new era of strategic gameplay. Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, highlighted the significance of this release within Meta's expanding VR/MR portfolio. While Civ VII is launching on various consoles, a PSVR2 version is not currently planned.

Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options

Civ VII VR immerses players in a detailed "Command Table" interface, allowing for strategic maneuvering and detailed observation of in-game elements. Players can seamlessly switch between immersive VR and MR modes, experiencing the game from a personalized museum vista in VR or adapting the Command Table to their physical space in MR.

The game supports single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes for up to four players using Meta Quest headsets. Players can team up against AI opponents or compete directly against each other. Online multiplayer requires 2K and Meta accounts.

Addressing Player Feedback

Firaxis Games acknowledged player feedback from the Civ VII early access period (February 6th, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Editions), particularly concerning UI issues. They've committed to significant UI improvements, focusing on intuitiveness, map readability, and overall polish. Future updates will also incorporate community-requested features like team-based multiplayer and expanded map variety. A quality-of-life update is planned for March, addressing UI, AI balance, diplomacy, and bug fixes.

Civilization VII VR is slated for a Spring 2025 release on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, with a precise date yet to be announced.
