Chris Evans Confirms No Return to MCU for Avengers

By AidenMay 29,2025

Actor Chris Evans has debunked recent rumors suggesting his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the upcoming film "Avengers: Doomsday" or any other project. In an interview with Esquire, Evans clarified that a report from Deadline claiming he would reprise his role alongside Robert Downey Jr. is inaccurate.

Following comments from Anthony Mackie, who inherited the mantle of Captain America post-Evans' retirement in "Avengers: Endgame," Evans addressed the matter directly. Mackie mentioned being informed by his manager that Evans would return, but when he personally queried Evans, the latter denied such plans. "I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then," Mackie stated. "At least, he didn’t tell me it was on the table."

Directly addressing the rumor, Evans emphasized, "That’s not true, though." He noted that similar claims have surfaced periodically since "Endgame," adding, "I’ve just stopped responding to it." Evans affirmed his retirement from the role, stating he is "happily retired."

While Evans has not returned as Captain America, he did make a cameo appearance as Johnny Storm in "Deadpool & Wolverine," though this was a minor, comedic role compared to his extensive tenure as the iconic superhero.

The future of the MCU remains uncertain following Jonathan Majors' exit due to legal issues. Originally slated to portray Kang, Majors' removal from the franchise has led to Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., taking over as the antagonist in "Avengers: Doomsday." This development fueled speculation about other original Avengers potentially returning, though no official confirmations have been made.

Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch revealed that his character, Doctor Strange, will not feature in "Avengers: Doomsday" but will play a key role in its sequel, "Avengers: Secret Wars." The Russo Brothers, who directed several previous Avengers films, are helming the project, which will explore multiversal themes. Additionally, Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter is rumored to make an appearance.
