Dynasty Warriors: Origins Faction Guide

By GeorgeNov 21,2025

Similar to most Dynasty Warriors titles, Dynasty Warriors: Origins plunges you into intense combat across ancient China, temporarily fighting alongside different warlords. Sooner or later, however, you'll need to decide which faction to pledge your allegiance to. This guide explains how to choose your faction in Dynasty Warriors: Origins.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins – Understanding Factions

Dynasty Warriors: Origins is divided into several chapters. During the first two, your character, known as the Wanderer, remains unaligned. You'll move between the forces of Sun Jian, Cao Cao, and Liu Bei, aiding them in various skirmishes and participating in major historical events such as the Yellow Turban Rebellion and the Battle of Hulao Gate.

Once you reach Chapter 3, the game informs you that a choice must be made by the chapter's end—you must commit to one of the three main factions. By then, you should have a general idea of which warlord you favor. If not, the game provides several additional battles to help you get better acquainted with their motives and leadership style.

Progress requires completing a specific number of missions for each group. Allying with Sun Jian requires finishing three missions for his side, Liu Bei needs two, and Cao Cao only asks for one. After meeting a faction's requirements, a new mission unlocks where you must formally choose a side. If you've finished a faction's prerequisites, you can select them during this critical decision. For instance, after I completed Cao Cao’s request first, the following battle presented a choice between him and Liu Bei—though Liu Bei's option was locked since I hadn't completed his missions. You are, of course, free to complete missions for all factions before making your final commitment.

Eventually, you must make a definitive choice. Once you do, the factions you turn down become inaccessible for the remainder of the game. You won't be able to undertake side quests from their officers, nor can your bond with them improve. This can increase the difficulty depending on your chosen path. For example, after siding with Liu Bei—whose faction initially has fewer commanding officers—I found fewer opportunities to earn skill points through side content.

Each of the three routes also includes unique missions. If you want to experience everything Dynasty Warriors: Origins offers, create a separate save file before selecting your kingdom. You can reload it later to explore another leader's storyline.

That covers how to choose your faction in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. The game is available now on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
