Marvel Comics is gearing up for an exciting relaunch of its monthly Captain America series, introducing a fresh creative team and a compelling new storyline that delves into Steve Rogers' initial experiences after being revived from suspended animation. This new series promises to explore Cap's very first encounter with the iconic villain, Doctor Doom, adding a thrilling twist to the narrative.
The announcement was made at the ComicsPro retailer convention, revealing that the series will be penned by acclaimed writer Chip Zdarsky, known for his work on Batman and Daredevil, and illustrated by the talented Valerio Schiti, who has previously worked on G.O.D.S. and The Avengers. The duo will be joined by colorist Frank D'Armata. Notably, Zdarsky, Schiti, and D'Armata have previously collaborated on the 2017 series Marvel 2-in-One, bringing their proven chemistry to this new venture.

The storyline kicks off shortly after Steve Rogers is discovered and defrosted in the modern Marvel era. Upon reenlisting in the US Army, Cap embarks on his first mission alongside the Howling Commandos to infiltrate Latveria, which has recently fallen under the control of a young, ambitious Doctor Doom. While the series will eventually transition to the present-day Marvel setting, the events of this initial story arc will have a lasting impact on Zdarsky and Schiti's ongoing narrative.
In a statement, Zdarsky expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying, "I’ve been a massive Captain America fan for decades. I loved writing the grizzled, older Cap in Avengers: Twilight, so getting to write the actual Captain America title feels like a dream! We’re exploring Cap’s early days in the modern era with a twist that I think is going to really surprise readers! I’m pretty excited to get this out there in the world, especially with Valerio and Frank’s amazing art!"
Zdarsky further elaborated on his approach, stating, "I’ve been approaching this title the way I approached my run on Daredevil, really trying to get in Cap’s head with a grounded, human look at who he is in this new world. Steve Rogers is the best of us, and I want that to come through on every page."
Schiti shared his excitement about working on the series, saying, "Captain America is one of my all-time favorites. I'm reuniting with Chip Zdarsky and Frank D'Armata after the amazing experience of Marvel 2-In-One, and I'm working on a story that strikes the perfect balance between heart, action, and entertainment! But the thing that is most exciting and unexpected is that I found myself thinking more and more about Steve Rogers, instead of just Captain America."
He added, "Chip's script is so clever and compelling that I’m sure readers will be dragged with us inside Steve's heart and soul. He’s a man that became the living embodiment of truth, justice, and freedom. He fought a war against Nazism, ‘died’ in that war, and came back to life to do his duty and fight again. That’s a lot of pressure, and if you do the math, he’s only in his late twenties in the era we’re exploring!"
Fans can look forward to the release of Captain America #1 on July 2, 2025, marking the beginning of this highly anticipated new chapter in the storied history of the Sentinel of Liberty.
