In the world of superhero cinema, every hero needs a formidable villain, and for the upcoming film *Captain America: Brave New World*, fans have been introduced to The Leader, portrayed by actor Tim Blake Nelson. The character's transformation was achieved through practical effects and makeup, resulting in a visibly mutated appearance that deviates slightly from the comic book version. Blue Whale Studios, the Atlanta-based special effects company responsible for The Leader's design and effects, recently shared insights into their original concept for Sam Sterns' alter ego, which closely mirrors the comic book depiction.
Blue Whale Studios initially opted for a design that emphasized a sickly appearance for the character, featuring an engorged head and pale green skin. They showcased this design on their Instagram, along with a video demonstrating the application of prosthetics on Nelson. Although the original design was straightforward and lacked the intricate details seen in the final film version, it provided fans with an intriguing glimpse into the creative process behind the character's transformation.
"We were originally brought on to design and apply the practical makeup for The Leader on the incomparable Tim Blake Nelson in *Captain America: Brave New World*," Blue Whale Studios stated. "As often happens in film, the story evolved, and during reshoots, the creative direction shifted. Our version was ultimately not used in the final cut. Still, we remain incredibly proud of the work we created."
The studio drew inspiration from the original comic book art, aiming to create a look that was both grounded and iconic, staying true to the source material while achieving a refined, natural realism. They highlighted the technical achievement of making the final makeup lightweight and comfortable for Nelson, a testament to the team's dedication.
The original design bears a striking resemblance to The Leader's first appearance in the Marvel comic universe in 1964's *Tales to Astonish #62*. However, the final design in *Brave New World* more closely resembles the character's portrayal in the 2018 series *Immortal Hulk*. The Leader's journey to becoming a villain in the MCU was hinted at back in 2008's *The Incredible Hulk*, where Sam Sterns was exposed to Bruce Banner's Gamma radiation-infused blood, setting the stage for his transformation.
Last May, reports surfaced that *Captain America: Brave New World* was undergoing reshoots to introduce a new villainous character, Sidewinder, played by Giancarlo Esposito, known for his roles in *Breaking Bad*, *Star Wars*, and *The Boys*. Esposito's character leads the Serpent Society in the film. Additionally, ahead of the film's release, five-time WWE world champion Seth Rollins confirmed that his role was cut following extensive rewrites and reshoots of the script.
