Borderlands 4 State of Play: New Details Unveiled
20-Minute Gameplay Deep Dive Video
The Borderlands 4 State of Play, streamed on April 30, 2025, as part of PlayStation's latest event, gave fans an in-depth look at the upcoming looter shooter. The featured video highlighted two of the four new Vault Hunters: Vex the Siren, who harnesses supernatural phase energy to enhance her abilities and summon deadly minions, and Rafa the Exo-Soldier, a former Tediore trooper equipped with an experimental exo-suit that can digistruct a vast array of weapons.

The gameplay deep dive also introduced players to the new planet, Kairos, teeming with warring factions, deadly fauna, and desperate inhabitants, all under the oppressive rule of the Timekeeper. The main objective is to spark a revolution against this tyrant, engaging with unique factions and rallying them to your cause. Returning fan-favorites like Claptrap, Moxxi, and Zane are set to assist players on this thrilling journey.
Additionally, the video showcased new gameplay mechanics, including the innovative licensed Parts system, which allows players to customize their weapons' behaviors and abilities, new Gear slots for more specialized builds, and the introduction of a new vehicle, the Digirunner.
Gearbox Denies Launch Date Change Influenced by Other Games
Before the State of Play, Gearbox Software announced a two-week advancement of Borderlands 4's release date, attributing it to "incredible development work." However, fans speculated that this move might be influenced by the release plans of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6), especially given that both Gearbox Software and Rockstar Games are owned by Take-Two Interactive.

During Take-Two Interactive's November 2024 earnings call, the company confirmed plans to release GTA 6 in Fall 2025. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick emphasized that this would not conflict with Borderlands 4's planned release window in the 2026 fiscal year (from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026). In an interview with Variety, Zelnick assured that "we wouldn’t, and no one would, stack up huge releases unnecessarily."
Gearbox Entertainment CEO Randy Pitchford took to Twitter (X) on April 30 to address these speculations directly. He stated that the decision to ship the game earlier was "literally 0% about any other product’s actual or theoretical launch date," emphasizing the studio's confidence in their product.
Despite the speculation, fans are eagerly anticipating the earlier-than-expected release of Borderlands 4, set for September 12, 2025, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Stay tuned for more updates by checking out our related articles below!
