Baldur's Gate 3 Surges on Steam Post-Patch 8, Larian Eyes Next Big Project

By MichaelMay 16,2025

The release of the highly anticipated Patch 8 for Baldur's Gate 3 has significantly boosted player numbers on Steam, setting developer Larian Studios up for success as they shift focus to their next major project. Launched last week, Patch 8 introduced 12 new subclasses and a brand new photo mode, sparking a surge in player activity as fans eagerly explored these additions.

Over the weekend, Baldur's Gate 3 achieved a concurrent player peak of 169,267 on Steam, a remarkable achievement for a single-player role-playing game in its second year. While Sony and Microsoft keep PlayStation and Xbox player numbers private, the surge on Steam alone speaks volumes about the game's enduring appeal.

Reflecting on Patch 8's impact, Larian's chief, Swen Vincke, expressed optimism about the game's future on Twitter. He noted that the player boost from Patch 8, combined with thriving mod support, suggests Baldur's Gate 3 will continue to perform well for some time. This success provides Larian with the space to concentrate on their next big project, which Vincke acknowledges comes with high expectations.

"Feeling good today about where we are with BG3," Vincke shared. "Patch 8 got a lot of people playing again. It took a lot of development effort but I'm happy we did it. With mod support thriving, I think the game will now continue to do well for quite some time. It gives us room to focus on making our next big thing as good as we can and that focus is more than welcome. We've got big shoes to fill."

Patch 8 marks the final major update for Baldur's Gate 3, closing a chapter on what has been an extraordinary period for Larian. Since its launch in 2023, the game has received critical acclaim and achieved tremendous commercial success, maintaining strong sales into 2024 and 2025.

In a surprising move, Larian announced their departure from the Baldur's Gate and Dungeons & Dragons franchise to develop a new, undisclosed game. They've maintained a media blackout to focus on this mysterious project, teasing it at various points before going silent.

Meanwhile, Dungeons & Dragons owner Hasbro has hinted at plans to continue the Baldur's Gate series. Speaking at the Game Developers Conference, SVP of digital games at Hasbro, Dan Ayoub, revealed that with Larian moving on, "a lot of people [are] very interested in Baldur's Gate." Hasbro is currently formulating future plans for the franchise and anticipates sharing more details soon.

Ayoub did not specify whether these plans involve a new Baldur's Gate game or another type of project, such as a crossover similar to the collaboration with Magic: The Gathering. However, he expressed a desire for a Baldur's Gate 4 but acknowledged that creating one would be a long-term endeavor.

"It's somewhat of an unenviable position," Ayoub remarked. "I mean, we're not in a hurry. Right? That's the thing, we're going to take a very measured approach... We've got a lot of plans, a lot of different ways to go about it. We're starting to think about, okay, yeah, we're ready to start dipping toes a little bit and talking about a few things. And I think, in really short order, like I said, again, not to over-tease that point, we're going to have some other things to talk about around that."
