Larian Studios, the creators of the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, have announced a complete shift in focus to their next, unannounced project. The studio has declared a media blackout, effectively silencing speculation until further notice.
While Baldur's Gate 3 players eagerly await Patch 8 later this year, Larian's CEO, Swen Vincke, confirmed via Twitter and a subsequent statement to VideoGamer that the team's full attention is dedicated to their new endeavor. Vincke's tweet expressed nostalgia for the journey with Baldur's Gate 3 but hinted at exciting future projects.
The upcoming game is confirmed to be neither a Baldur's Gate sequel nor another D&D title. Instead, Larian is pursuing a completely original IP, a decision reportedly made after internal discussions failed to generate sufficient enthusiasm for a Baldur's Gate continuation.
Previous statements from Vincke offer only vague clues. In November 2023, he hinted that the new game would be boundary-pushing. Earlier, in July 2023, he mentioned the possibility of a future Divinity: Original Sin sequel, but emphasized that it wouldn't be the immediate next project. He highlighted the immense effort poured into Baldur's Gate 3, suggesting the need for a creative refresh before tackling another large-scale project.
The nature of Larian's next game remains shrouded in mystery. Given their history with fantasy RPGs, the possibilities are vast.
