Matajuegos, the innovative indie co-op from Argentina, has exciting news for fans of unique gaming experiences. Their surrealist documentary game, Atuel, is set to launch on PC and Android later this year. Enthusiasts can already pre-register on the game's Steam page, with Google Play expected to follow suit soon.
Originally launched on itch.io in September 2022, Atuel quickly captured the gaming community's attention with its distinctive mix of documentary storytelling, experimental gameplay, and mesmerizing dreamlike visuals. The game's innovative approach earned it the 'Innovation in Experience Design Award' at IndieCade 2022, along with numerous other accolades. It has also been showcased at prestigious events like the Marché du Film at Cannes and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

What Do You Do in Atuel, the Documentary Game?
Atuel immerses players in the Atuel River Valley of Argentina, a region renowned for its breathtaking beauty yet grappling with the effects of climate change. Rather than a traditional game, Atuel offers an experiential journey where players transform into various animals and elements of the ecosystem, becoming an integral part of the landscape. You might find yourself soaring through the skies one moment and flowing as the river itself the next.
The game integrates real-life interviews with historians, biologists, geologists, and local residents, who share insights into the region's history, its current condition, and the looming impact of climate change. Matajuegos worked alongside the international documentary team, The 12.01 Project, to weave these compelling narratives into the gameplay. The visuals, inspired by the Cuyo desert, create an almost otherworldly atmosphere.
While Android pre-registration is pending, interested players can explore the Steam page or visit the official website for more details. Upon its mobile release, Atuel will feature localization in seven additional languages and full controller support.
