Avowed: A Spiritual Successor to Morrowind Unveiled

By BellaMay 14,2025

Avowed may not be a groundbreaking game, but it's a captivating RPG that truly resonates with those who love to explore. It brings to mind the classic RPG Morrowind, which set the standard for immersive digital worlds long before today's benchmarks were established. In Morrowind, every element of the landscape, from rocks and bushes to mountains and the ocean floor, was ripe with potential for adventure. Obsidian Entertainment has embraced the challenge of recapturing this sense of discovery, and they've done so remarkably well.

The World of Pillars of Eternity

Set within the expansive universe of Pillars of Eternity, Avowed welcomes players into a world brimming with detail, even if you're new to the series. While knowing the backstory of the previous games can enrich your experience, the narrative unfolds seamlessly through dialogues and in-game cues. The plot revolves around an emissary, chosen by the Emperor of Aedyr, tasked with investigating a mysterious fungal plague in the Living Lands that's driving people insane by affecting their souls. In this setting, souls cycle through life, death, and reincarnation. The protagonist, marked by a god at birth with an unknown identity, sports unusual growths on their head that resemble plants or fungi, often inspiring fear in others.

A Chaotic Welcome to Paradise

The protagonist's arrival in the Living Lands is anything but calm; their ship is assaulted by crazed Aedyran guards. Landing in the ironically named port city of Paradise, they find it in disarray with missing leaders, closed gates, and rampant chaos—a scenario that feels right at home for fans of traditional RPGs. The thrill of discovery kicks in as you explore, with my first move being to dive into the sea near the port. There, I unearthed sunken treasures while dodging the risk of drowning. This led me to a smugglers' camp where I overheard their schemes before narrowly escaping detection. Back in the city, I eagerly took on quests and began scouring every corner for secrets.

Treasures Beneath Every Stone

One particularly memorable experience was breaking into a locked house, looting its contents, and then climbing scaffolding to reach a lighthouse. At the top, I found a treasure map, unique yellow-tier boots with an intriguing backstory, and stunning vistas. As dusk set in, the glowing mushrooms illuminated new paths and hidden secrets. The game world is filled with such surprises: from chests hidden under spiderwebs in the sewers, to nests on precarious beams holding coins, and backpacks dangling off cliffs filled with goodies. Even throwing an ice grenade into the water to freeze it momentarily allowed me to grab submerged loot.

Stories Waiting to Be Discovered

The game is packed with these moments of discovery. Supplies can be found in the most unexpected places—on rooftops, behind waterfalls, and atop hills—each leading to new quests, rare artifacts, and compelling narratives. For example, while exploring the slums, I broke into a shack and encountered a blind man and his grieving wife, who were being hunted by mercenaries. Another time, I helped a nobleman retrieve a lost ring from a sewer, which turned out to boost my health regeneration—a perk I couldn't resist keeping. I also stumbled upon the tragic scene of two lovers who had perished together, which led me to the northern outskirts where I confronted guards and a smuggler's corpse. Further exploration took me through a reptilian camp and a battle with a formidable giant, putting my combat skills and gear to the test.

Endless Possibilities and Exploration

In just eight hours of gameplay, I've embarked on numerous adventures without touching the main storyline or engaging in repetitive grinding. My focus has been on exploring, experimenting with different character builds, and understanding how various items interact. Whether opting for a shield and staff or switching to heavy armor and melee weapons, each decision opens up new avenues for play. With many mysteries still unsolved and systems yet to be explored, my journey in Avowed is far from over. The game promises a continuous stream of discoveries that remind us why RPGs are among the most engaging genres in gaming.
