In *Avowed*, you have the option to choose from five distinct Backgrounds, each offering unique dialogue options and a specific starting weapon. Importantly, all Backgrounds have access to the full range of equipment and abilities, ensuring versatility in your gameplay. The five Backgrounds are: Arcane Scholar, Court Augur, Noble Scion, Vanguard Scout, and War Hero. Let's delve into the narrative implications of each:

  • Arcane Scholar: With an academic backstory, your character graduated from Bragganhyl Academy, famous for publishing a treatise that stirred controversy with a local lord, leading to your arrest. However, the emperor saw your potential and recruited you into the imperial court archives. Arcane Scholars are well-versed in the occult, legal precedent, historical observation, and poetry, influencing dialogue choices accordingly.
  • Court Augur: This Background carries a tragic tale where your character's visions and the failure of village crops led to suspicions and threats from neighbors. Fleeing to Highcrown, the emperor appointed you as his personal mystic. Court Augurs are deeply connected with the spiritual and magical realms, making them ideal for players interested in a wizard role-play, especially with a companion like Giatta.
  • Noble Scion: Born into wealth and influence but marred by family scandal, the Noble Scion sought refuge with the emperor. As a loyal ally to the empire, this Background suits players who wish to uphold imperial interests throughout the Living Lands, embodying the complexities of nobility and power.
  • Vanguard Scout: Spared from execution, Vanguard Scouts have a humble background and a preference for the wilderness over political intrigue. Valued for their tracking and spying skills, this Background is perfect for those looking to role-play a hunter, particularly resonating with the companion Marius.
  • War Hero: After quelling a Skaenite uprising, the War Hero was honored by the emperor and integrated into elite warrior circles. This Background is ideal for players who want to embody a warrior archetype, potentially finding a strong connection with the companion Kai.

Every Background’s Starting Weapon in Avowed

Each Background comes with its own starting weapon, all categorized as One-Handed Melee items of Common Quality. While these weapons are not particularly strong and will require upgrading or replacement early in your journey, choosing a Background should be based on the narrative and role-play elements you wish to explore, rather than the initial weapon. Here are the starting weapons for each Background:

  • Arcane Scholar – Common Dagger (One-Handed)
  • Court Augur – Common Mace (One-Handed)
  • Noble Scion – Common Sword (One-Handed)
  • Vanguard Scout – Common Axe (One-Handed)
  • War Hero – Common Spear (One-Handed)

You will find your starting weapon leaning against some crates near the shipwreck during the On Strange Shores Quest.

That covers every background in *Avowed* and their impact on your gameplay. Choose the one that resonates with your desired role-play experience, and embark on your adventure in the Living Lands.

*Avowed is available now on PC and Xbox.*
