Atari's Infogrames label acquires the Surgeon Simulator franchise from tinyBuild. This acquisition marks a key step in Infogrames' revival as a publishing arm for Atari, focusing on titles outside Atari's core portfolio. Infogrames, a brand synonymous with game development and global distribution in the 80s and 90s, is being re-energized through strategic acquisitions.
Infogrames plans to expand the Surgeon Simulator franchise through new digital and physical distribution channels, and the development of future installments and compilations. The label's history includes notable titles like Alone in the Dark, the Backyard Baseball series, the Putt-Putt series, and the Sonic Advance games. After a period of rebranding under Atari and subsequent bankruptcy, Infogrames has been reintegrated into the modern Atari structure.
This Surgeon Simulator acquisition follows Atari's recent purchase of Totally Reliable Delivery Service, demonstrating a clear strategy of growth through acquisitions. Infogrames manager Geoffroy Châteauvieux highlighted the enduring appeal of Surgeon Simulator, describing it as "a rare opportunity to acquire a game with a timeless appeal."
Atari Acquires Surgeon Simulator
Surgeon Simulator, originally developed by Bossa Studios, features the hilariously inept surgeon Nigel Burke and his patient, "Bob." The game's unique blend of dark humor and chaotic gameplay has garnered significant popularity. Atari aims to build upon this success.
Initially released on PC and Mac in 2013, Surgeon Simulator expanded to iOS, Android, and PS4 in 2014. A VR version followed in 2016, and Surgeon Simulator CPR, featuring co-op and motion controls, launched on Nintendo Switch in 2018. Surgeon Simulator 2 was released on PC in 2020 and Xbox in 2021. The lack of a currently announced sequel may be linked to Bossa Studios' staff reduction in late 2023. tinyBuild, having acquired several Bossa Studios IPs, including Surgeon Simulator and I Am Bread, facilitated this transaction.
