Astartes 2 Animation Returns with Stunning Teaser, But Beware the Catch

By VictoriaMay 21,2025

Games Workshop has thrilled Warhammer 40,000 fans by resurrecting the much-anticipated Astartes 2 animation with a stunning teaser trailer. However, there's a twist: none of the content featured in the teaser will appear in the final animation.

Astartes 2 is the eagerly awaited sequel to the fan-made original Astartes animation crafted by Syama Pedersen, which is widely regarded as the pinnacle of Warhammer 40,000 animations, rivaled only by Amazon’s exceptional Space Marine 2 animation for the Secret Level anthology series. The success of Astartes was so profound that it inspired Saber Interactive’s hit game Space Marine 2, leading Games Workshop to bring Syama on board to work on the sequel.

After years of silence, leaving fans to speculate if Astartes 2 had been shelved, Games Workshop surprised everyone with a teaser trailer release on January 29, 2025. The trailer promises an animation of unprecedented scale and quality, featuring intense melee combat, shooting, vehicle battles, and even spaceship engagements. It showcases various Space Marine chapters in action across diverse settings, battling multiple enemy factions such as Tyranids, Orks, and Tau.

While the teaser ramps up excitement for Astartes 2, Games Workshop clarified on the Warhammer Community website that it does not contain actual footage from the upcoming animation. Instead, it's a montage representing the past lives of the characters who will appear in the series. The trailer ends with a subtle hint about the final story, encouraging fans to speculate and piece together the narrative.

Despite the excitement, the absence of a disclaimer in the trailer might lead to confusion among fans, who might expect to see the showcased elements in Astartes 2. The full animation is slated for release in 2026, exclusively on Games Workshop's Warhammer+ subscription service.

The teaser's final image suggests that the characters may end up in an Inquisition-led Deathwatch Terminator squad, sparking further speculation among fans. Meanwhile, enthusiasts of Space Marine 2 have expressed envy and hope that some elements from the Astartes 2 teaser might influence future updates to their game, with capes being a popular suggestion. As Saber Interactive continues to develop Space Marine 2, the hope is that they might draw inspiration from Astartes once again.
