Apple TV+ Loses $1B Annually, Despite Hits

By EricMay 25,2025

Apple's venture into the streaming world with Apple TV+ is reportedly facing substantial financial challenges, primarily due to hefty investments in high-quality original programming. A recent paywalled report from The Information highlights that Apple is incurring losses exceeding $1 billion annually. Despite efforts to curb spending in 2024, the company only managed to reduce costs by approximately $500,000, bringing their yearly expenses to $4.5 billion from the previous $5 billion since launching the service in 2019.

Apple TV+'s original content has earned widespread acclaim, both critically and from viewers. Shows like Severance, Silo, and Foundation are prime examples of the service's commitment to quality, with nothing about their production suggesting cost-cutting measures.

This dedication to excellence is reflected in the critical acclaim received by these series. Severance, recently renewed for a third season following its Season 2 finale, boasts an impressive 96% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. Silo follows closely with a 92% score. Apple's upcoming show, The Studio, a Seth Rogen-led meta comedy that debuted at SXSW, has already achieved a stellar 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Other hits like The Morning Show, Ted Lasso, and Shrinking further bolster Apple TV+'s reputation for quality content.

According to Deadline, Apple TV+ saw a surge of 2 million new subscribers last month during Severance's run, suggesting that the company's investment in premium content may eventually yield positive returns. It's important to note that Apple's fiscal 2024 generated $391 billion in annual revenue, indicating that the company can sustain these losses for the foreseeable future as it continues to build its streaming platform.
