Absolute Batman Meets His Match: The Absolute Joker Revealed

By VioletApr 25,2025

Absolute Batman stands out as one of DC's most significant comic book launches in recent years. The debut issue soared to become the best-selling comic of 2024, and the series has consistently topped the sales charts ever since. It's clear that readers are captivated by this bold and often surprising reinvention of the Dark Knight.

With the completion of the first story arc, "The Zoo," creators Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta took a moment to discuss with IGN the groundbreaking changes they've brought to the traditional Batman mythos. Dive into the details of designing a more muscular Batman, the impact of having a living mother on Bruce Wayne's life, and what lies ahead with the emergence of Absolute Joker.

The Absolute Universe's Batman is an imposing figure, with his exaggerated muscles, shoulder spikes, and other enhancements to the traditional Batsuit. It's no surprise we ranked Absolute Batman among the 10 greatest Batman costumes of all time. Snyder and Dragotta shared their approach to crafting this larger-than-life Dark Knight, emphasizing a Batman who lacks the wealth and resources of his classic counterpart.

"Scott's vision was to go big," Dragotta told IGN. "He wanted the biggest Batman we've seen, and when I initially drew him large, Scott pushed for even more. We ventured into Hulk-like proportions."

Dragotta elaborated, "The design was driven by the need to make him bold and iconic, reflecting his essence as a weapon. Every element of his suit, down to the emblem, serves a purpose, transforming the utility belt into a comprehensive arsenal. This concept will continue to evolve as we move forward."

"For Snyder, a massive Batman was essential. Unlike the classic Batman, whose wealth serves as a superpower, this Batman compensates with sheer physical presence.

"When the classic Batman appears, his intimidation factor is partly due to his wealth," Snyder explained. "He arrives in a high-tech suit or vehicle, signaling his superiority. But without those resources, this Batman's size and physicality become his tools of intimidation. He's a force of nature, confronting villains who believe they're untouchable."

The influence of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns is evident, particularly in a striking splash page from issue #6, which pays homage to Miller's iconic (and surprisingly divisive) Dark Knight Returns cover, showcasing Batman leaping through the air against a lightning bolt.

"Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's Batman is a huge inspiration," Dragotta said. "Their storytelling and narrative style deeply influenced us, making this homage a fitting tribute."

Giving Batman a Family

Absolute Batman reimagines many aspects of the Dark Knight's mythology, notably by introducing a living mother, Martha Wayne. This change transforms Batman from a solitary orphan into a character with much to lose.

"It was a decision I debated extensively," Snyder admitted. "Having Martha alive felt fresh and intriguing, given the paternal focus in other universes. Her presence became the moral compass of the series, adding a new layer to Bruce's character. She's both a source of strength and vulnerability."

Another significant twist introduced in issue #1 is Bruce's childhood friendships with key members of his rogues gallery, including Waylon Jones, Oswald Cobblepot, Harvey Dent, Edward Nygma, and Selina Kyle. These relationships play a crucial role in his development into Batman.

"The idea was to explore how Bruce could become Batman without global training," Snyder said. "He learned from his friends: underworld knowledge from Oswald, combat skills from Waylon, logic from Edward, and city politics from Harvey. Selina's influence will also be revealed soon. These connections form the heart of the series, grounding and complicating Bruce's journey."

PlayAbsolute Batman vs. Absolute Black Mask ---------------------------------------

"The Zoo" arc showcases Batman's growing influence in Gotham, alongside the rise of new supervillains. The focus is on Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask, leader of the nihilistic Party Animals gang.

"Black Mask's theme of nihilism and the aesthetic of his death face made him the perfect villain for our story," Snyder noted. "We reshaped him like clay, staying true to his core as a crime boss while infusing fresh elements. Nick's art transformed him into something entirely new."

Their confrontation in issue #6 culminates on Sionis' yacht, where Batman delivers a brutal beating without crossing the line into murder. The fight underscores Batman's underdog status in the Absolute Universe, challenging the city's underestimation of him.

"Those lines weren't initially planned," Snyder said of Batman's defiant words during the fight. "They encapsulate our Batman's spirit. He thrives on being underestimated, using it as fuel to prove his impact despite the odds."

The Threat of Absolute Joker

Joker, the dark mirror to Batman, looms large in the series. Teased at the end of issue #1, Absolute Joker possesses wealth, global training, and a chilling absence of laughter.

"The Zoo" concludes with a glimpse of Joker, shrouded in a cocoon of dead babies, ordering Bane to handle Batman. This setup hints at a confrontation between the two.

"In this inverted system, Batman disrupts order, while Joker embodies it," Snyder explained. "Joker's already a terrifying figure before meeting Batman, and their relationship will evolve throughout the series."

Dragotta added, "Joker's power and global influence are evident. His storyline, intertwined with the mysterious Arks, is set to unfold soon."

PlayWhat to Expect From Absolute Mr. Freeze and Absolute Bane ---------------------------------------------------------

Issues #7 and #8 introduce a new arc with Marcos Martin taking the artistic helm, focusing on Mr. Freeze. The cover hints at a horror-infused reinvention of the character.

"Marcos brings an emotional depth to the story," Snyder said. "Mr. Freeze reflects Bruce's struggles with his friends knowing his identity and his initial plan to sacrifice himself. This version of Freeze is dark and twisted, fitting our creator-owned approach to the Absolute Universe."

As for Bane, issue #6 sets the stage for their confrontation. Snyder teased, "Bane is big—really big. We wanted him to dwarf Batman's silhouette, challenging the notion of size and power."

Finally, the broader Absolute line, including Absolute Wonder Woman, Absolute Superman, and upcoming titles like Absolute Flash, Absolute Green Lantern, and Absolute Martian Manhunter, promises more interconnected stories as we move into 2025.

"While the series have been standalone so far, we're planning how these characters will interact," Snyder revealed. "Expect hints of this in 2025, as the villains and heroes begin to influence each other across the Absolute Universe."
