Absolute Batman Debuts Major New Villain

By IsabellaDec 08,2025

DC's Absolute Universe is in full swing, with more series on the horizon. If you're new to this, the Absolute Universe is a publishing initiative from the comics giant that grants top creative talents free rein to reinterpret its most iconic characters, unbound by established continuity. So, what does this mean in practice? In Absolute Batman, legendary writer Scott Snyder was able to reimagine Bruce Wayne from a completely new angle: what if Bruce was never a billionaire playboy and lacked access to his signature high-tech arsenal?

Absolute Batman #9 Is Out Now

$19.89 at Amazon (save 33% from $29.89)

The first story arc of this fresh series is available for pre-order on Amazon now, with a release date of August 5. The second arc launched with issue #7, offering a new spin on Mr. Freeze, and issue #9 is currently available. This issue kicks off a new interpretation of the classic Batman foe Bane. He retains his massive luchador physique and the power of Venom, but his motivations are different, and he shares a surprising connection to Alfred Pennyworth.

IGN had the chance to speak with the creative minds behind Absolute Batman, writer Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta. In our discussion, they talked about Bane's intimidating physical presence and his sharp intellect. “The main thing about Bane is he's genuinely huge. That's the core of it,” Snyder explained. “Some people speculated he might be smaller. He isn't. We wanted a character whose silhouette makes Bruce Wayne's look small by comparison.” Absolute Batman #9 also debuts this universe's versions of Dick Grayson, who hasn't yet become Robin or Nightwing, and the mercenary Deathstroke.

Absolute Batman #9 is a 32-page issue available now on Kindle for $4.99 and on sale at Amazon for $19.89 (a 33% discount).
