The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, announced at last year's Game Awards, has finally received some clarification. While details remain scarce, IGN's recent interview with the project leads revealed key information.
Confirming fan speculation, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi stated that the sequel is a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's storyline. Director Hideki Kamiya cryptically hinted at Amaterasu's return, a confirmation later provided by Hirabayashi.
The interview addressed the Nintendo DS prequel, Ōkamiden, starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu. Hirabayashi acknowledged mixed fan reception to Ōkamiden, citing both its platform and the absence of key original team members. He clarified that the new sequel directly follows the original Ōkami's narrative.
Ōkami's ending, without spoilers, sets the stage for a sequel by leaving Amaterasu and another character embarking on an unexplored journey, promising new challenges and adventures.
However, fans will have to exercise patience. The team confirmed the sequel is in very early development, explaining the early announcement as a result of their excitement. Further updates, according to Hirabayashi, are some time away.
