The Digital Transformation of Devarattam
This app was developed as part of my initiative titled "The Digital Revolution of Devarattam" under the guidance of Kalaimamani
Mr. M Kumararaman (retired teacher and Kalaimamani recipient), Kalaimani Mr. M Kannan Kumar, and Kalaimani Mr. K Nellai Manikandan from Zamin Kodangipatti, who were honored with the prestigious KALAIMAMANI, KALAIMANI, and Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awards respectively for their contributions to Devarattam. I dedicate this app to these legendary figures, my guru Mr. E Rajakamulu, and all revered masters of Devarattam. The Devarattam app was created to promote awareness of this art form and its distinguished awardees. The app thoroughly documents Devarattam's history and celebrated practitioners. Devarattam is a traditional folk dance from Tamil Nadu, historically and presently performed by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community. While comprising 32 to 72 dance variations, it fundamentally consists of 32 core steps with additional variations building upon these foundations.
Devarattam dancers typically hold handkerchiefs in each hand while wearing Salangai (ankle bells) and perform to the rhythms of the traditional percussion instrument called Deva Thunthumi.
